2010 Arlington Diocese Distinguished Teachers of the Year

| The following teachers have been chosen as the 2010 Arlington Diocese Distinguished Teachers of the Year sponsored by Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia:
Elementary School – Ms. Donna Godek, Holy Cross Academy Middle School – Ms. Patricia Cummins, St. Ambrose School High School – Dr. Michael Potter, Paul VI Catholic High School Special Needs – Ms. Lorena Dorsey, St. Theresa School The heartbeat of any school is the classroom teacher. The Diocese of Arlington is blessed to have so many talented and dedicated teachers in our 45 schools. Our colleagues who have been recognized this year for the Teacher of the Year Award are excellent representatives of the superior teaching that occurs everyday in our Catholic schools," said Sister Bernadette McManigal, BVM, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Arlington. This is the fourth year of the Teacher of the Year Award, founded to honor dedicated Pre-K through twelfth grade teachers in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Arlington whose accomplishments and talents have made an extraordinary impact on students, colleagues and the school community. These awards recognize teachers who consistently and in extraordinary ways evidence exemplary teaching, a Christian and caring attitude and dedication to their school communities. Over 1,300 teachers currently staff the 45 Catholic schools located in the Diocese of Arlington. Each teacher will receive $1,000 and each school will receive $500. Nominations were submitted by principals, colleagues, parents and current or former students who are 18 years or older. All winners were recognized at the annual Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia Catholic Schools/Business Partnership Awards Banquet held on March 21, 2010. The Diocese of Arlington is among the fastest-growing dioceses in the nation; since 1997, the diocese has seen a nearly 40 percent increase in registered Catholics. The diocese has opened seven elementary schools in the past decade. The Diocese of Arlington covers 21 counties and 7 cities in the northern tier of Virginia.
