| Seventy-one CBNNV members, Washington Ireland Program Interns, and Sponsor Family Members attended the July CBNNV breakfast at the Dominican Retreat on Friday, July 23. This was the 15th such CBNNV breakfast shared with the Washington Ireland Program since WIP's inception in 1995. Attendees were treated to five interns' stories of life in Ireland and Northern Ireland and the challenges the interns face as young adults. These stories were most inspiring as they demonstrated the effects of spirituality and family on the presenters.
THE WASHINGTON IRELAND PROGRAM FOR SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP (WIP) is a unique US-Ireland nonprofit organization that is helping to prepare the next generation of leaders for Ireland and Northern Ireland. WIP was founded in 1995 with the aim of addressing the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland. This mission has now evolved to include a focus on •Leadership •Active Citizenship, and •Public Service WIP recognizes that ending conflict is different to the task of building a sustainable peace. Peace, to be sustained, must be built on a new level of trust among the next generation. This is the challenge that faces young people today and they need our support. During their eight weeks in Washington, WIP participants are given the opportunity to become deeply engaged in the American political process and are challenged to consider what they will contribute to the future of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Students gain invaluable practical experience by completing internships in US government, media, business and non-profit organizations. At the end of the summer, participants return home with enhanced professional and interpersonal skills, as well as a new confidence in their ability to work as a team to make a difference. | |||||||||
